TUTORIAL : 1.2 8V FIRE - Engine Swap

.
This tutorial shows you how to realize a simple installation of 1,2 FIRE engine using some easy data and photos.
(Panda MK2, Fire engine, 1986-2003)

In Italy many panda-drivers swap the original engine with the 1.242cc 8V FIRE.

You can choose between Punto 60 or Punto 75 engines.
(Fiat Punto first series “176” , produced between 1993 – 1999).
The Punto 60 engine is SPI (Single Point Injection), the Punto 75 is a MPI (Multi Point Injection).
The SPI engine has the maximum torque lower down the MPI, then you can make better use in off-road.
In contrast, the 1.2 MPI is more powerful on the road.

1.2 SPI Punto 60 : 60 hp - Max Torque 102 NM at 3000 RPM
1.2 MPI Punto 75 : 73 hp - Max Torque 106 NM at 4000 RPM

Engine code (SPI) : 176B4000
Engine code (MPI) : 176B8000

Note : Also other Fiat cars use the same engine, but the ideal one is Punto 60 / Punto 75.

=

First of all we recommend you to do a good maintenance of the engine, which should be as accurate as possible given that working the engine on the ground is much more comfortable (thermostat replacement, oil seal coils, sleeve seal of cooling system , valves cover gasket, spark plugs and spark plug wires, oil seal gearbox, drive shafts and cv boots, etc… ).

The engine must be coupled to the Panda 4x4 gearbox using these tips:
- Clutch of Punto 75, which has the same diameter as the one of 1,100 Fire engine (180 mm), but with different codes and probably springs.
- Pressure Plate of panda4x4
- Sheet metal casing between the engine and transmission of the Panda 4x4
- Timing side bracket of the panda 4x4

The Punto exhaust manifold is slightly oversized compared to Panda 4x4 cylinder head exhaust outlet.

Punto 75 manifold :
The oval passages that attach to the head are 33 x 24 mm.
The 2 in 1 exhaust pipes are 38 mm outside diameter.
The final output (to the flange after the hose) is 46 mm inside, the external diameter of the pipe is 52 mm.

Panda 4x4 manifold:
The oval passages that attach to the head are 31 x 25 mm.
The 2 in 1 exhaust pipes are from 35 mm outside diameter.
The final output (to the flange after the kat) is 41 mm inside, the external diameter of the pipe is 49 mm.

With this premise, the ideal would be to mount the complete manifolds of the Punto, sadly they do not fit because they are longer, the attach of the kat (and also the center part of the pipe) is different, and the final piece goes in the position of the transmission shaft.
However, the flange where the pipes become from 4 to 2 is identical, the best solution, in my opinion is to mount the first piece (which is attached to the head) of Punto 75, and to attach the flange 2 in 1 of the panda.

You need also the air filter box, all the injector system, the complete engine wiring, a pulley of a Punto without aircon and power steering, the wiring of the same car (Punto) from which you have taken the engine, a Punto 75 throttle body.

The starter motor is another story.
The starter motor of the panda is big, and even filing the crankcase on the 1,2 it would be awkward.
Several people who have done the job have suggested to mount the starter motor with Magneti Marelli code 063101023010, which should be the one for last MPI Panda.

=

This is the beginning for me of mounting the 1.2 engine :

1.jpg

2.jpg

STEP 1 :
Performing a first removal and comparison with the existing plant in our panda and supported by “eper” schemes we still need the water pipes, the lambda sensor and the alternator pulley for the panda with Magneti Marelli plant and the second piece of the exhaust (from manifold to the centre section).
I took an alternator of Punto 55 (65 Ampere) to avoid disassembling pulleys.

3.jpg

4.jpg

5.jpg

STEP 2 :
We advice to take another airbox to have availability of material if you have to make some changes for the assembly.
The second piece of the muffler, where there is the lambda probe should be adapted to the panda and certainly on this occasion change the path of the muffler by a single central tube, without overlapping the transmission shaft.

STEP 3 :
The 1.2 engine is on the ground, so we can change the timing belt, operation very simple if before removing the old one we will make the two signs in red and mount the new belt just take care to respect the original marking and the previous signs.

6.jpg

7.jpg

8.jpg

STEP 4 :
You can mount the exhaust manifolds of the panda not to redo the second piece of the exhaust pipe.
Whereas the engine is about 2 cm higher , you can obtain from the scrap yard two down pipe sections (where it connects the lambda sensor) to retrieve the two top flanges (1 cm each) that you need to match the first with the second piece of the exhaust (before mounting you weld them togheter).

9.jpg

10.jpg

11.jpg

STEP 5 :
Another adaptation to do is the starter motor, the original one of the panda touches to the engine block not allowing the proper alignment of the same to the engine flywheel, therefore you need a small emery to remove a couple of millimeters to the motor and some small bumps to the engine .

12.jpg

13.jpg

As it has already been said you will use the thrust bearing of the panda and the clutch of the Punto.

14.jpg

15.jpg

You need to replace the gasket under the air filter with the one of Panda 1,100 to mount the original airbox.

18.jpg

Now the engine is ready to be mounted.

I wish it was this easy for us in the UK, unfortunately all of our 4x4's are Carbed rather than SPI so require further modifications though its not much more from what I have been told!

It is not so difficult John !! :-!

The ideal thing is to find a Punto 60 or Punto 75 and to take all the necessary pieces at same time.
In this way you can take whatever you need.

You could also keep the original CARB with 1.2 engine ;)

Though you will need a new fuel pump as (from what i can gather) the older mechanical fuel pump cant be put on the 1.2.. .Unless you can keep the head :-?

Yes mate, if you use the SPI or MPI electronic system you need a new fuel pump, instead the mechanical one.

The ideal thing would be to change the fuel tank, swapping with another recent Panda,
you could also add an external electric pump. ;) ;)

2 Cambio panda 1100
3 Accoppiamento motore cambio cn frizione punto 75,spingidisco panda 1100, lamierino e cuscinetto panda 1100
